At the age of 78, Dutch football coach Dick Advocaat has led the Caribbean island of Curacao to the men’s FIFA World Cup finals for the first time in its history. It’s the latest achievement in a career that has seen him win league titles in four different countries and manage teams from the Netherlands to South Korea, and it has us wondering about the links between age and coaching ability. Aston Moore has coached some of the UK’s top track and field athletes, including world champions Katarina Johnson-Thompson and Phillips Idowu. As his 70th birthday approaches, he tells Ed Harry how his training approaches and philosophies have changed over time. He explains why the knowledge he has accumulated during that time has helped inform his methods, how he has adapted to evolving technologies, and the importance of finding the best way to learn for each athlete. He also reveals the athletes who have taught him the most about his own work and why he believes it is best to encourage the people he coaches to find ways to improve themselves. Ed also talks to journalist Anthony Wootton about what age and experience look like in American football. With coaches like Andy Reid leading some of the NFL’s top franchises, and Bill Belichick, 73, coaching college football after his successes with the New England Patriots, is experience something that is valued differently in American sports? Could the rest of the world learn from your approach of giving coaches time to establish themselves?
