Eilish McColgan hopes that this year Great North Run will be a third time fortunate after twice to emulate his mother with the victory.
The 34 -year -old Scottish beat the three -time Liz McColgan winner, the best time in the course from Newcastle to South Shields last year.
But the 2021 runner -up crossed the line five seconds behind the winner Mary Ngugi Cooper in a dramatic final of six athletes on that occasion.
“Obviously, everyone would love to win. It is such an iconic race. I have seen it from an early age, my mother won there, Legends of the Sport has won this race,” McColgan told BBC Sport.
“I am so close on both occasions. Ultimately, I would love to go there and take the victory and it would be incredible. But I am very aware that the field is always really strong.”
McColgan will join Kenya’s New York Marathon marathon, Sheila Chepkirui, and twice Great North Run Vivian Cheruiyot winner on Sunday’s departure line, along 60,000 other runners.
The 2021 winner of Great Britain, Marc Scott, faces the defending champion of Kenya, Abel Kipchumba, the winner of the London marathon, Alex Mutisa Munyao, and the head of the European record of the Belgium marathon, Bashir Abdi in the elite male race.
