President Trump plans to nominate the conservative economist EJ Antoni to direct one of the main statistics agencies of the Government, 10 days after saying goodbye to the previous boss on a disappointing job report.
Antoni is an economist at the foundation of the heritage of the right. He previously worked for the conservative Foundation of Public Policy of Texas.
“Our economy is booming, and will ensure that the published numbers are honest and precise,” Trump wrote in a publication on social networks.
If the Senate confirms it, Antoni would take control of the Office of Labor Statistics (BLS), which is responsible for producing the monthly jobs report and the monitoring of inflation.
Trump fired the previous Commissioner of Labor Statistics, Erika Mtntarfer, less than two weeks ago, after the agency reported expected work profits from Waker for May, June and July. The president said the numbers were manipulated to be bad, a statement widely dismissed by independent economists.
The post BLS is typically hero of apolitical technocrats that serve terms that cover presidential administrations. It is likely that the election of an partisan economist to supervise the office raises new questions about the reliability of government data that moves the market.
