This week’s lessons plan is in excellent numbers, class: We get 3,700 more teachers!
But has anyone done mathematics?
In truth, this lesson is not about learning, students, budgets or results, it is about union power.
And it’s more: more teachers who provide more bad instruction in more classrooms for more children, more of the same.
Mayor Adams announced Wednesday that the New York City Education Department, the largest individual employer in the State, with 76,000 teachers, will hire a additional 3,700 teachers and 100 deputy director.
That is just to start. Initial hiring is simply an initial payment towards a total planned increase of 17,700 teachers, which costs around $ 1.9 billion annually, what Adams has said for years would be too expensive.
This extravagant increase is required by the controversial class of class size approved by the state legislature and the government. Hochul signed, ignoring the protests of the parents and the terrible record of DO, all to please the union of teachers.
What could go wrong with this poisoned hiring wave?
Special, when fiscal problems of the city and the State are expected, cuts of federal funds are expected and the student population is decreasing.
Not to mention the national scarcity of qualified teachers that states are doing everywhere silly requirements to fill vacancies: what could go wrong with increasing Nycs teachers ranks by a huge 23%?
Obtaining new teachers should be easy, as long as the quality does not matter.
After all, the median of the salary of teachers in New York City exceeds $ 100,000, before adding generous benefits, vacations, pensions and possession after four years, in addition, there is no penalty at all if children do not learn. (Deputy Directors get more, like the chancellor, the employee of the city best paid).
But if Adams wants good Teachers will have a big problem to find them.
The experienced teachers renounce the city’s schools, and the qualified candidates go somewhere else, while the generalized indoctrination of the left inflames hatred in schools, the infused pedagogues with the left establish real academics that give dable classrooms.
Let’s do an easy mathematical task in a city whose public schools are leaving behind most children (about two thirds to three quarters of our children cannot read and make mathematics at the degree level).
Given 912,000 students, 144000 total employees and 76,000 current teachers (before the new Start contract), calculate the proportions of bolts to the staff (regardless of the decreases probably in registration); Showing work is optional.
Solution: proportions of approximately 12: 1 students to the existing faculty, students of 10: 1 to the Total Faculty and students 6: 1 to the staff.
The rather ideal proportions already: one member of the faculty for every 12 students and a staff member per six!
The supporters of the class size law, in part the unions of the teachers, affirm that the smallest sizes improve learning. But the evidence does not support that, and certainly does not justify this exorbitant expense.
Research shows that quality or teachers triumph amount Or teachers to learn, with much.
And here in the city, many of our best schools have larger classes, no closer, which can reason: as families leave bad schools, making classes there closer, they choose better schools, making classes bigger.
The poorest districts of the city already have smaller classes and earn little of them. Reducing your classes even more will have a zero impact.
The city would be better adding more desired charter schools.
Most of them do not use union teachers and are not affected by the new narrower class size rules. However, they exceed most of the district schools, with almost $ 20,000 less per student while they do. They make it concentrating on the foundations, which require results of students and teachers, and adhere to strict discipline, everything that New York public schools do not.
The New York school system budget is a scandalous $ 41 billion, that is a world that exceeds almost $ 45,000 per student to do a scandalously horrible job.
Instead of pouring water into a sieve, spending thousands of millions to reinforce the ranks of a petual failure system, we must advance in the choice of school and the excellence of teachers for a real improvement.
This hiring spree needs to rebuild. And this lesson plan obtains an F.
