The thing to understand about Donald Trump is that he thinks like a programmer.
This is not surprising, given his experience as an “apprentice.” But it also means that sometimes you will step on your own history.

If it’s Friday and it hasn’t been big news for a couple of days, I know you’ll be giving the press something to feed into the weekend shows. He knows how to fill that void, especially with Democrats essentially leaderless.
Just as the president was basking in global acclaim for negotiating a seemingly impossible ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, he would post something wild on Truth Social that would usher in another mini-news cycle.
Trust me, having interviewed him many times, he knows all about lighting and camera angles, and has definite preferences, like using a boom microphone instead of the standard lapel microphone. He once complained to the crew that his skin looked too orange.

He continues to dismiss the unproven claim that the 2020 election was stolen, rejected by his own Justice Department. He won the 2024 election easily enough, and then came the retaliation campaign, installing an inexperienced loyalist to do what no one else would do: bring criminal charges against James Comey and Letitia James. And he attacks Joe Biden, who is now fighting cancer, in almost all of his speeches.
And he does it openly. Here is a typical post:
“The documents conclusively show that Christopher Wray, the deranged Jack Smith, Merrick Garland, Lisa Monaco, and other corrupt criminals from the failed Biden administration approved Operation Arctic Frost. They spied on senators and congressmen, and even recorded their calls. They cheated and rigged the 2020 presidential election. These radical left lunatics should be prosecuted for their illegal and highly unethical behavior!”
TRUMP ANSWERS IF HE WOULD RUN AS VICE PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE IN 2028
By the way, I don’t think Trump would seek a third term, when he would be 86 at the end of another term. It is also flatly prohibited by the Constitution.
By refusing to dismiss it, you’re basically trolling people. What if he uses this or that maneuver, as Steve Bannon promotes? Furthermore, no president wants to be seen as a premature failure.
Trump tells you exactly what he’s going to do. He said he would cut programs favored by Democrats during the government shutdown, and that’s precisely what he’s doing. This is transparency (for its supporters) or authoritarianism (for its detractors).
It is no coincidence that the administration announced that the SNAP program, which reaches 42 million Americans with what is commonly called food stamps, would no longer receive funding as of this Saturday.

Trump is also easily triggered. He broke off trade talks with Canada over an ad in Ontario that he called fake AI, a strange stance for a guy who fancied himself as a fighter pilot throwing excrement at protesters. Additionally, the ad accurately cited Ronald Reagan’s anti-tariff comments in a radio speech, albeit out of character.
When things calm down, I’m sure Trump will fix things with what he still wants to be the 51st state.

Last week, Trump did two things that drew opposition from some of his traditional allies.
He demanded $630 million from his own complacent Justice Department for the suffering he suffered during all the past investigations that led to four indictments against him. Ben Shapiro, the conservative author and podcast host, said this was an egregious conflict of interest and that Trump should abandon the idea. If you’ve lost Ben Shapiro, the founder of the Daily Wire, that’s a bellwether.

The second was the demolition of the east wing. Images of the remains of that piece of history are constantly replayed on television.
Trump was lying when he said his plans for what is now, with cost overruns, a $350 million ballroom would not touch the East Wing, which dates to 1902. He then acted quickly and quietly to demolish the entire building. The remains are the history. You don’t need a panel of lawyers to explain it. Trump did exactly the opposite of what he promised. It’s still hard to see.

The president’s trip to Asia may generate new headlines when he meets with China’s Xi Jinping. If not, you will find other ways to generate news.
That’s what happens with Trump. He makes good use of the enormous megaphone provided by the White House. He shows every day, flooding the area with so many stories that it is difficult even for the journalists and politicians who follow him for a living to keep up.
