Federal prosecutors in Washington, DC, will no longer slapped people with charges for serious crimes for possession of rifles or shotguns in the capital of the nations, Chordination for the United States prosecutor for the district of Columbia Jeanine Pirro.
Change means that federal prosecutors will not seek charges under the DC law that made illegal be wearing rifles or shotguns in the district, Expet in limited cases for permits holders.
According to the new policy, the office of the United States prosecutor will continue to present charges when a person is accused of using a shotgun or rifle in a violent crime or has a criminal record that prohibits them from having a firearm. The new policy also covers great capacity magazines, but does not include guns.

Local officials can also process people for illegally possessing unregistered rifles and shotguns.
Pirro, a former Fox News presenter, said in a statement that the new policy is based on the orientation of the Department of Justice and the Office of the General Solitor.
He also said that the change meets two decisions of the Supreme Court that protect the rights of weapons.
Pirro said that a general prohibition of having shotguns and rifles violates the 2022 court of the Court that annulled a law and hero of New York that people are entitled to cozy in public for their own defense. He also cited a 2008 ruling that blocks the prohibition of DC of the guns at home.

The change occurs in the midst of President Donald Trump’s movement to increase the presence of the Federal Police in the district in an attempt to reduce crime. Hundreds of federal agents and national guard troops have been deployed in the streets of DC
The White House said there have been 76 firearms since the federal acquisition began earlier this month.
Pirro has been a firm critic of the efforts of local officials to address the crime in DC since Trump took it to lead the largest American prosecutor’s office in nations in May.

“We will continually take all illegal and licensed firearms, and to strongly prosecute all crimes related to them,” Pirro said in his statement, adding that she and Trump “are committed to processing crime with firearms.”
Fox News Digital communicated with the United States prosecutor’s office to obtain additional comments.
Violent crime In DC, 35% fell between 2023 and 2024, the United States prosecutor’s office said in December under previous leadership, stating that they were 3,388 incidents last year compared to 5,215 incidents the previous year.
