How do NCAA baseball regionals work?
The NCAA baseball tournament is not the standard single-elimination bracket format. The tournament begins with the regionals, followed by the super regionals and finally the Men’s College World Series.
The regionals have a double-elimination format, with the 64 teams divided into 16 mini-groups of four teams. Each of the top 16 teams in the country hosts a regional, and each of those 16 teams is the No. 1 seed in their regional. Games begin Friday in a double-elimination format, with each bracket winner advancing to the super regionals.
The super regionals consist of 16 teams that advance to eight matchups, which are a three-game series. The winner of each super regional advances to the Men’s College World Series, in which those eight teams will again be divided into two groups of four, in a double-elimination format. That’s in addition to the Championship Series, which is a best-of-three series between the bottom two teams.
